Ground Yellow Corn:If corn is going to be used as an ingredient in dog food we would prefer not to see it so heavily used. The current AAFCO definition for Ground Yellow Corn is:"same as ground corn, except that the corn used is yellow in color." The current AAFCO definition for Ground Corn is:"the entire ear of corn ground, without husks, with no greater portion of cob than occurs in the ear corn in its natural state." We would prefer that Corn not be used in the first five ingredients and have at least a couple sources of meat protein listed before it.

Chicken By-Product Meal:It is hard to determine the quality of this ingredient. Chicken By-Product Meal is a cheaper, lower quality ingredient mostly found in low end dog food brands. Chicken By-Products contain any part of the chicken besides the meat content, which is the most important. The current AAFCO definition of Chicken By-Products is:"Consists of the dry, ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines -- exclusive of feathers except in such amounts as might occur unavoidably in good processing practices. "

Corn Gluten Meal: This ingredient is mainly used to “hold” the food together. Corn Gluten is a cheap, low quality ingredient. Basically anything left over during the human processing falls into this ingredient. The current aafco definition of Corn Gluten is:” The dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm.”

Whole Wheat Flour : Wheat is believed to be the number one dog food ingredient that causes allergies within dogs. Wheat flour is a grain fragment.

Animal Fat: Animal fat is a lower quality ingredient. It is an unnamed fat source, thus making it hard to determine its quality. The official AAFCO definition of Animal Fat is:” is obtained from the tissues of mammals and/or poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".”
