BREEDER’S CHOICE DOG FOOD

Breeder’s Choice brand pet food formulas are manufactured by Central Garden & Pet Company. The first line of Breeder’s Choice brand foods was introduced in 1947. By 1960, Breeder’s Choice had expanded to several different food types. In 2003, Breeder’s Choice launched a campaign to highlight the importance of human-pet relationships for people suffering from cancer. The program is called “Caring for Both Ends of the Leash”.

BREEDER’S CHOICE DOG FOOD REVIEW

Breeder’s choice has several different product lines that specialize in dog food (though some also contain treats and supplements). These formulas are free of preservatives, except for mixed tocopherols (vitamin E).  The first ingredient in many of these formulas is a carbohydrate, such as brown rice.

BREEDER’S CHOICE DOG FOOD FORMULAS

  1. AvoDerm Natural - AvoDerm Natural brand dog food formulas are made with avocados, which are marketed as being very good ingredients for the coat/skin health of dogs. However, some pet owners still have concerns about avocados, since it has been suggested that they could be toxic for dogs. Breeder’s Choice has a section on their website dedicated to answering many of the commonly asked questions about avocados. AvoDerm is marketed as being able to cure symptoms such as bad odor, infections, thickened skin, excessive scratching, dry flaky skin and thinning coat.
  2. Pinnacle Dog Food - Breeder’s Choice Pinnacle dog food formulas take a “holistic” approach to dog nutrition. As stated by the company, a holistic approach involves “preventing disease”. Pinnacle is marketed as being a “complete nutrition”, without any common food allergens or low quality ingredients. All of the vitamins and minerals contained in Pinnacle dog food formulas are from “natural” sources.
  3. Advanced Pet Diets Select Choice - Advanced Pet Diets is focused on providing a variety of formulas for the changing life stages of dogs. These formulas are free of chemical preservatives, such as BHT or BHA. They are also free of all by-products. There are no corn products in these formulas listed among the first five ingredients.
  4. Active Care - Active Care brand dog food formulas are designed to be fed to dogs that need extra nutritional support for their joints. These formulas are made with “natural chicken cartilage”, as well as unprocessed chondroitin and glucosamine. Other ingredients are designed to support a healthy coat and good skin. Many of these formulas contain a carbohydrate (brown rice) as their first listed ingredient. Other common ingredients include flax seed, dried egg product and chicken meal.

BREEDER’S CHOICE CUSTOMER RATINGS

Customer reviews of Breeder’s Choice brand dog food formulas are relatively mixed. Some dog owners reported that they had good results when feeding their dogs any of the Breeder’s Choice formulas. The main concerns among pet owners involved the use of avocado in Breeder’s Choice Avoderm formulas. This ingredient is still subject to some controversy. The fact that some of the formulas contained a carbohydrate as the first ingredient was also met with some concern. Though brown rice is a complex carbohydrate, some pet owners would rather find a dog food formula that contains a lower percentage of carbohydrates.
