hello. my lab toby is 9 years old.i have been feeding him CANIDAE ALS from puppy.
my local feed store handles it for 45 dollars for 44 lb bag.
toby loves it. i add sardines to food also,it makes his coat shiny.
i have had no stool problems with him using this food.
you know labs have problems itching to food if too much wheat or chicken.
canidae has chicken but it is not a problem with toby.
i am getting puppy and starting him on canidae also.
i have had no problems with this food.
I can’t say enough great things about this brand. The ingredients are top grade. It’s also relatively inexpensive compared to most other foods.
5 year old mini-schnauzer ate Canidae for 1 day and had diarrhea in the evening and itched so badly she had to have benadryl before she could calm down enough to go to sleep. Previously she ate Canidae for almost a year before having so many digestive problems, we put her on a vet recommended diet which she did well with for about 9 months. We tried Canidae again for 1 day as I stated earlier and the results were frightening. Originally the vet thought it was just a sensitive stomach not the food, but with a second try, it looks like something in the food she is allergic to. Just watned to post this in case anyone else is trying to figure it out
Back to the very expensive vet recommended diet for this girl.
My 6 year old Husky mix was raised on Canidae ALS for the first 4 years of her life, and was doing great till Canidae changed some ingredients in the food, made her quit eating it after 4 years, so I went on the hunt for another food, tried her on the Canidae grain free ALS when it first came out, her stool was always soft, and she would eat lots of grass, made her sick, so I have been jumping around from food to food for the past 2 years, so I decided to try The New Canidae Grain Free Pure Land, she is eating it only if I soak it or mix another brand can food in it, her stools are solid, but that may be from the can food, the main thing that I have noticed is that she has been itching excessively now shortly after I put her on this food… I am so done with Canidae, 3 STRIKES YOUR OUT!!! I am going to have to go for a limited ingredient food now… How sad that I can’t trust the food my dog was raised on anymore.
HUSKYS are problem eaters as they get older.
its not FOOD ,its your dog.my sister has 2 huskys and they are pain in the a to feed.she jumps from food to food with nothing really working good.
those dogs are FISH EATERS and after they get older, they turn their nose up to dry food.
she said this is her last HUSKYS .
trust me, its not CANIDAE food doing it.its that breed of dog.
I have a 5 year old Lab who has never had firm stool in his life, and is so high strung that I’ve never been able to keep weight on him..especially during hunting season, or during field trials. I switched to the Canidae grain-free Salmon and rice formula, and he is gaining weight and has had firm stool for the first time in his life. To those who have had problems…perhaps your dog has a chicken or lamb allergy. Don’t condemn Canidae if you are feeding something that he is allergic to. I’ve tried Diamond, Pro Plan, Eukaneuba, Blue Buffalo, Eagle Pack, and a few other brands. Canidae is ungodly expensive, but the best food I’ve found so far. The last six months on Canidae have turned him into the healthiest dog my vet says she’s ever seen, and she’s 80 years old. I also have a female Lab who didn’t lose any weight while nursing a litter of seven pups while on Canidae. This is by far the best food I’ve found so far, at least for Labradors.
my lab is same, doing fine on CANIDAE even tho labs are allergic at times to CHICKEN.
you said, expensive, i get 44 lb bag for 45 dollars at my local feed mill.also after 10 bags you get free bag .
great price.i buy 2 bags every trip and store bag at home .
My schnauzer had a few health problems and after switching her to Canidae ALS, her hair is softer, she has lost weight (and needed to) and she seems to have more pep in her step. Our vet even commented on her new attitude. I couldn’t be happier with this product. I feed her 1/2 can in the morning and dry in the evening. At 12, she is still frisky and happy!
Our 6 year old Old English Sheepdog has been on ALS since the day we got her and she does great on it. Best dog food for the price out there.
i agree too.its not PERFECT.it has a little more rice than most experts like food to have but not much more.
My corgi loves the Lamb and Rice kibble. She had problems with dry skin and “crud butt”. Once we started feeding Canidae, the problems cleared up.
My Lab/Great Dane mix puppy had severe diarrhea from Canidae ALS and the lamb/rice formula. I switched to Science Diet large breed puppy, but discovered that it has a high protien rating and lots of grain fillers which is not good either. I’m still searching for a good dog food. I feel Canidae is nothing more than an expensive mess to clean up after.
Hi Steve,
I am feeding my 3 yr old Border Collie ALS now and he does well on it. His poops are solid.Try out the website I gave you.You might have to try out several brands before you find the right one that will agree with your dog. It has reviews from qualified people.
Good Luck,
Wayne
I would try mixing the food before feeding all Canidae. Like us (humans) sometimes the change is too much all at once. Try the grain free formula…wonderful stuff.
If you look into Great Danes, you’ll find that most of them actually have problems with most any dog food. They usually are diagnosed with dog IBS and need a “whole food” diet.
you are right.some dogs are pain in a on dry food.their body cant handle it well.
like comment i made on HUSKYS.they are very sensitive to dry dog food EVEN tho they were fine on it for years.
some breeds will drive you nuts switching to right food.
best advice i can give is go to your DOG FORUM where there are members that have your breed of dog.
they will do a lot of work for you on foods that are working on your breed.
this is where i found out labs have problems with CHICKEN,TURKEY.
a lot feed labs LAMB/RICE dry food.
Try a limited ingredient food like Blue Buffalo Basics, or Wellness LID, or Natural Balance LID…. If its a food allergy these foods should make a difference.
I’ve been feeding Canidae for 2+ years to my 4 corgis. The younger ones get ALS, the older two get Platinum. I’ve had no issues at all with this food. Their coats are gorgeous, stools are firm and they eat with great gusto. I can buy the 44 pound bags of ALS for $45, which is a GREAT price. This is one of the best foods I have ever fed my dogs, and I’ve been feeding dogs for 43 years.
Keep a close eye on your pets. This food is awful. When they begin to have problems, save yourself a lot of money and switch their food rather than having a giant vet bill . . . plus the heartache and worry until you finally figure out it is the food causing the problems.
I have been feeding my dog’s canidae all life stages for about 6 months now and have had problems with there stool not being firm. Any suggestions as to what food to try?? So many out there and I try not to feed them food with tons of corn and bi-products.
Try Blue Buffalo Basics, its for dogs with food sensitivities, allergies.
I put my corgi on this dog food and she developed hot spots. I took her off right away. I am sorry but I do not feel this brand is as good as it says it is.
Canidae is produced by Diamond Pet Foods………..
I think you should contact Canidae…then you will know for sure!!!!
That is why I am taking my dog off Canidae… They are deceitful, and I don’t trust them or there products anymore, I am feeding her the grain free pure land, its supposed to have bison, and lamb, there is something in there that is causing excessive itching, and the itching started shortly after I started her on the food… She is on monthly flea control, my house is almost dust free, and I use hypoallergenic laundry soap, so what else is left?? The food!!
How is that deceitful??? The ingredients are on the bag. There are a lot of things dogs can be allergic to besides fleas, dust and soap. I have seen dogs with the same spectrum of allergies that people have. It’s possible one of the ingredients in the food is the culprit or it is possible your husband used a new fertilizer on the lawn and that is the culprit. You don’t know what is causing the allergy until you have an allergy test done. You might want to have your facts straight before you blast someone.
we all have opinions. sometimes i get mad and say things too.
DIAMOND killed a few dogs because a a hole left bad corn into food,it had mold on it.
diamond used to be food of choice for many dog owners.
i bet DIAMOND now is regulated more than any company over that.
but i feel CANIDAE is fine .at least so far i have not heard any bad things on it.
I am with Margie…. I have been feeding my dogs Canidae for almost a month now after taking them off of nutro to try something different. Both of my dogs have been scratching to the point of leaving scabs and loosing alot of hair. It has become increasingly worse the last few days. I am going tonight to get something else to feed them, I can’t have them suffer any longer.
try for that has no CHICKEN/TURKEY in it.
lamb/rice mix would be what i would try.
