FROMM DOG FOOD REVIEW
Fromm dog food formulas do not contain any rice gluten, wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate. In addition to this, all of the ingredients contained in Fromm dry dog food formulas are certified as being human-grade. None of the formulas contain corn or wheat ingredients, since these are cited as being the cause of many food-related allergic reactions in dogs.

These formulas use muscle meat as their primary protein source, and contain chicken as their first two ingredients. In all, there are seventeen ingredients in Fromm Classics formulas.
FROMM CONSUMER RATINGS
Most customer reviews about Fromm dog food formulas are positive. Many dog owners cite it as improving the coat quality, skin condition and energy level of their dogs. The few negative reviews weren't complaining about the quality of the food - rather, they were mostly displeased about the fact that some of Fromm's canned dog food formulas are associated with Chinese manufacturing companies. There did not seem to be any informative negative reviews that had issues with the nutritional quality of Fromm's dog food formulas. Most dogs seem to find Fromm's dry formulas very palatable, with no cited digestive issues.

To be fair, I had limited hope my poodle mix would like it, but she
is adopted and just moved from Texas to Florida and has been fed “Beneful” in an “eat when you feel like it manner” for all of her 3 plus years.
I lost my border collie/chow/shelty mix at 17 1/2 years old and I always fed her twice a day more because my grandparents fed that way and their dogs all lived beyond 15 and several to almost 20 years. It occurs to me as an adult, there’s many reasons to feed in a consistent manner, so anyway, I fully intended to train my adoptee to eat twice daily. I knew her food was crap, but it’s what she knew, and I knew nothing of the genetic issues poodles (toy) have the closer to pure bred they get. Mines supposedly pure, but I could care less and on fact would prefer a mutt, but I love her….So, I start the retraining and she’s unwilling to eat at first, then only a little at a time so began adding Chobani yogurt to it, and she ate a bit better.
I had started noticing yeast issues in her ears which I cleared up, and around this time I started using a zesting grater and using a small piece of “Pupperonis” and creating a dust on her food. She loves those treats so it wasn’t surprising when she began snarfing her meals in 3 minutes or less. That said, her ears got soupy again, she developed a crusty sore on her scalp, and she began growing yeast blooms on her skin and I knew things needed to change in a hurry.
I did as much research as possible and short of going the “BARF” route, Fromm Beef no grain seemed like the best option and God help me, I’ll do raw food but it seems like such a pain in the ass. Anywho, anti-fungal shampoo, foot dunks in an anti-fungal wash, and frequent ear cleanings and ear hair plucking were all being done while I started the transition.
Now, at first I didn’t think she’d like the Fromm foods. If she didnt like the human equivalent of the Fatty Arches (McDonalds) she sure as hell wasn’t gonna like healthy food. To my shock, she not only liked it, she loved it.
So, while I don’t know I’d her allergies ears and skin will clear, I sure hope this does the trick. She’s been more maintenance in 4 months than my Maddy was in almost 18 years.
I share this to counter that the “dogs don’t like it” comment. That your dog had loose stool makes me wonder two things, did you “cold turkey” switch them? If so, and all you got was loose stool, you are lucky. You should always slowly transition in new food.
Second, it’s not about what your dog likes, but what allows them to live a happy healthy life. I’d you are a person that eats for happiness and enjoys garbage, I see your reasoning. That’s not a judgement, simply a theory.
Regardless, you’d have to train the dog to eat it. Top it with an egg, top it with plain yogurt, top it with something thats healthy but that he/she likes the flavor. Trust me, just like a humans diet being sound typically yields healthy humans so goes your pet.
They weren’t meant to eat that shit sold by the major brands that are divisions of multi-national conglomerates.
I just hope her issues get better. She’s almost completely weened off the benecrap, so time will tell.
Best of luck!!
P.S. If a pet owner is an unhealthy being, odds are so
Is their pet.
Katie: Extreme diarrhea with bleeding (if not parvo etc) is acute colitis caused by an extremely inflamed colon. Be careful to blame the first thing you see. We had that happen with our GSD and an xray showed small bits of gravel going through his colon that he had picked up somewhere. Our vet immediately did an xray when we had the bloody diarrhea because we were blaming the rabies shot…wrong.
Usually when this happens with a food, there has been a change in the formulary, percentage of something. The best thing to do is ask Fromm if they have made any major changes to their brand recently. Are they getting their protein from a new farm, etc
Diogy: Just because California Natural switch to to P&G does not automatically mean you have to change, no matter what people say. If it still works for your dog, stay with it.
to katie ‘s reply my lab experienced the same thing on the gold adult . she was on it for about 8mo. no issues then 6 days into this recent bag the samething that happen to your dog rocko happen to mine. I send a sample to fromme for testing and didn’t get back results yet. I to think maybe it was a bad bag.
Ok that’s weird bc I feed our min pin/terrier mix te surf & turf. He has had mushy stools & at times a bad case of the runs since I bought a new bag 2.5 weeks ago. Hm. In general I love this food though – hope nothing fishy is going on :/
My dog Rocko had extreme diarrhea after eating this last batch of Fromms grain free beef frittata. It waS so bad, he was bleeding, of course causing me to take a sample to vet. Turns out it was clean. I’m wondering if its just a bad batch and iof anyone else has experienced this with Fromms recently. Before this last bag, he did so great on Fromms and had no issues at all.
Was she already on the Fromm?
If not, you can’t just switch a dogs food cold turkey especially after they’ve been on crap food for a long time.
I’ve transitioned mine over 10 days and she had loose stool one day which I knew would be uncontrollable diarrhea unless I backed off for another day.
Now she’s five pieces from full transitioned.
Hope this helps, but it’s always possible she ate something outside that made her sick. If you weened her off the old food, and all of a sudden after eating it a while she got sick, odds are heavily on the side of another reason for her tummy issues.
Have a 1 1/2 yr old GSD and she had massive diahrea from Fromms dry food. I so wanted her to be on this food.
Switched to California Natural and the diahrea went away. Now I have to find new food again because of CA Natural being bought by Proctor and Gamble. UGH
The food is good, customer service sends back lectures that make you feel they are questioning your intelligence when you ask for information and give them the reason why, therefore I choose to support companies that treat customers with respect.
My best friend “Rielly ” is a 16 month olg West German Shepherd Dog who arrived eating what the breeder fed his dogs, the food was one of the best but it was not what we were feeding my other two GSD’s Rielly develped “cow pies ” every time he went.We tried almost all the better brands, and the vet was NO DAMN HELP…..Finally someone suggested Fromm’s and they said ,”may-be you might want to add alittle bit of “real pumpkin ” we did just that with GREAT GREAT RESULTS!
No more cow pies and he’s doing great!
Thank you,
Jim
If people spend so much time trying to figure out what company puts what to animal’s food and praise manufactures who does not put too much poisonous additives, why just give your dog human food without preservatives…
It probably will be much more healthy and tastier.
First, this article on Fromm’s is a little outdated. They no longer use any foreign canning facilities. They are now using an American family run canning facility.
Here’s my story: About a year ago, my shih tzu started having severe diarrhea with alot of blood. I took him to the vet, had a bunch of tests run, and couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him. I started doing my own research online and discovered that alot of dog food companies put things in their food that is really bad for dogs. I switched him to Solid Gold and he immediately got better. However, after some more research, I discovered that they may use a type of preservative that is carcinogenic so I started my search for a new brand of dog food. I discovered Fromm’s grain free and now have both of my dogs on it. It is a premium pet food but is still affordable and I feel confident that I’m not poisoning my dogs either!
My girl Cutie she is part border collie/ beagle mix and getting up in years and is currently on the duck/sweet potato and loves it and being 9yrs old I may change it to the senior blend.
My 11 year old American Cocker became very sick last summer. She has never been a fussy eater but never dove into her bowl when it was in front of her either. She ate when she wanted and I thought that was fine. After $500 in vet bills, it was determined that she was having a diet based reaction/alergy. Probably has had it for her whole life but we just didn’t realize it. To stabilizer her, I was feeding her Hill’s Prescription Diet — costs a small fortune — in a salmon and rice formula. It took a while but I finally found Fromm’s Salmon a la Veg. What a changed dog!!! She dives into her bowl, morning and night! She is far more active and healthy. A bald spot on her belly is finally growing in — I didn’t even know it would do that after all these years! She is happier, healthier and more energetic than we have ever seen her! I have my mother switching her dog to this food too now! Thanks Fromm’s.
I put my 10 year old Aussie mix and <1 yr Rhodesian mix on Fromm Gold about six months ago. They both love it and are doing very well. It is a good quality food, made in the USA and reasonably priced. I am really surprised more people don't know about it.
I just switched my 7 yr old Yellow Lab and my 2 yr old Golden Retriever to the Fromms Whitefish and Potato formula… My golden has a lot of food allergies.. chicken, lamb, corn, carrots, wheat. She also can be a little aggressive with other dogs so after reading much about this topic it appears that kibble with a high protein percentage can contribute to this behavior..I had both my girls on Orijen which I liked but the protein is 42%. I switched my golden to Flint River Ranch trout and sweet potato because of the low protein which is around 23%.. I noticed after a while her beautiful lustrous coat was becoming a little dull and she seemed hungry all the time. Both my dogs eat raw at night and they both get a lot of supplements, omega fish oil, ester vit c, glucosamine and chondrotin, flax seed oil, etc.
I was glad to find the Fromms 4 star had a low protein count of 23% and will see how they do on it..
I fed my spaniel/collie mix this food for a two months. She had very soft mushy stools. She hated this food she only ate if she was really starving. Then I switched to wellness and the same thing soft mushy stools. My dog will turn her nose up at both foods. She started trying to eat other dogs poop outside because she refused to eat fromm and wellness dog food. I now have her on dry Royal Canin and purina pro plan canned food. She eats likes she enjoys her meals now. All this human grade dog food, holistic and no grains…let face it people, our dogs don’t like it and won’t eat it. I think our dogs are trying to tell us something.
You are mistaken about a few things. One, mushy stools and lack of appetite can indicate a malnurishment issue ( that can be metabolic or renal in nature) two, eating other dogs poop wasnt about hunger or taste…that too is a health issue and warning sign . I am glad your dog likes whole grains—something nature never intended for dogs— and sprayed on fats ect. I hope for your dogs wellbeing and that this works well for he or she… the issue with poop or stools may return if it wasnt brought about by eating a poisen like a frog or ect. If it does return please dont go dog food shopping. Go to your VET!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this food!! I feed the 4 star and will never switch to another food! As a professional handler it is important that my own dogs look like super stars, and that is why I feed Fromm. I have switched many client dogs to Fromm as well as many other friends dogs and turned other handlers onto this food! I have a 17 year old Whippet that has been on it forever and attribute his health, apperance, and longevity to Fromm 4 star. When people see him the are absolutely amazed and switch foods right away!
I feed Fromm to my 5 year old Beagle, my 5 year old Border Collie, and all three of my kitties. I LOVE this food! My Beagle has an extremely sensitive stomach and has never had an issue with Fromm. My Border Collie is very picky and will starve herself before she eats something she doesn’t like….but with Fromm, she licks the bowl clean and asks for more! I also thank Fromm for being affordable for the great quality of the products they offer. I’ll never feed anything else!!
Fromm no longer has ANY of its food made in China. The only food ever made in China was the canned and they now own their own canned food facility in USA. Just thought I should update your site.
Put my guy on the Duck mix, he’s a 50lb spitz mix. He was really bored with Canidae it seemed. He cleans his bowl every time and no digestive issues for a week now. So far, so good.
My dog was diagnosed with an auto-immune skin disease, Sebatious Eniditis, He was skin was scaling like fish scales and he was losing his hair. I put him on Surf & Turf and vitamin supplements. 20,000 units of Vitamin A, 400 Units of Vitamin E, 1000 mg fish oil and 2 teaspoons of safflower oil. He looks amazing and the first 4 weeks I had to bathe him in a special shampoo and now, he looks great. All my dogs (5) are now eating the Surf & Turf! Thank you for making such a quality product.
Diane
Diane, I don’t understand your 31/2 rating if you love it so much…….?????????
YOU SHOULD HAVE GIVEN A 5 star rating……
LOVE this dog food. I put my 75 lb american bulldog/ pit bill mix on it so that he would lose his beer belly lol. 6 weeks later he weighed in at 84.6 lbs of solid muscle…he had hair loss on his tail that grew back and his coat was as shiny as ever!!!! Thanks to the Fromm family!
