IAMS DOG FOOD
Iams brand dog food is produced and marketed by The Iams Company. Iams was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 1999, and has expanded to offer a large number of different pet products. In addition to producing dog food, Iams also produces cat food, cat treats, pet food “sauces” and dog treats. Iams is also the sponsor of a radio show on Sirius XM, called “The Pet Hour”. Iams traces its roots back to the 1940’s, when Paul Iams decided he wanted to research how to create pet food, In 1969, Paul Iams developed a dog food formula, naming it Eukanuba. The company grew rapidly, stating sales of $100,000 in 1970. By 1999, Iams had over $900 million in sales. Iams was subject to some negative press, when animal rights activists released video footage taken from an Iams-contracted research center. The research center in question was displayed as treating dogs to testing situations in an inhumane and dangerous environment.
IAMS DOG FOOD REVIEW
Being a large company, Iams has expanded to have many different dry dog food formulas. These formulas are generally divided into three categories: ProActive Health, Healthy Naturals and Premium Protection. In a significant number of their formulas, Iams lists Corn Meal as the first or second ingredient. Other commonly used ingredients listed in the top five include chicken by-product meal, ground whole grain sorghum, corn grits, brewers rice and dried beet pulp. Iams states that they use corn ingredients in their formulas because “corn is an excellent carbohydrate source”. However, since many dogs are allergic to corn and chicken, Iams formulas may not be appropriate for all dogs. The inclusion of corn itself is usually associated with a low-quality dog food formula.

IAMS CONSUMER RATINGS
Most consumer ratings about Iams brand dog food are average to negative. While not all dog owners reported having a bad experience with Iams food, the negative reviews were in the majority. In most cases, dog owners either cited the bad press Iams got for animal testing or the inclusion of corn as their reason for giving Iams a poor rating. It should be noted that corn is often referred to as a filler ingredient, designed to help “bulk up” the content of dog food. The dog owners who didn’t report any problems with Iams cited that their dogs did not experience adverse health effects on an Iams diet. Some dog owners cited that the ingredients of Iams changed after Iams was purchased by Procter & Gamble.

I to have not been pleased with Iams. In mid Dec 2011, I purchased a bag of the Iams Sensitive Naturals(Salmon) based on it not having any corn, wheat,or fillers, because of him having really bad allergies, not to mention his vet gave his approval of Iams.
My lab seem to really like it but then I began to notice he became lethargic and sleeping more than usual. I immediately took him off the Iams and began to read some consumer reviews on line- I am horrified that I gave my baby a food that has more bad reports than good.
I have switched him to Natures Recipe-grain free and will continue to monitor him. If he does not show any improvement by weeks end, he will be going to the vet.
I switched from Puppy Chow to Iams Puppy for large breed and my 6 month old shepard mix ate it at first but now he will only eat it when he is extremely hungry. His cost is very dry and brittle and he is constantly is scratching. I will not ever buy this brand again. I will be switching to Blue Buffalo very soon. It also makes him belch like there is no tomorrow.
Look there are products out there called GMO and Bt. These are in corn, canola, cotton, soy and alfalfa. These are pesticide laden in the seed. Monsanto asked the government not to make them label these crops cause it would hurt sales. Corn in your dog food? GMO I bet and that is why dogs are getting so sick
You must switch to grain free. It will save your pets life.
That’s what the vet told us…. Gosh forsaken companies…
My 3 year old lab has been on Iams for about a year. I must say I am not a fan. There are so many fillers and grains in it! My in-laws’ labs are also on Iams. All three dogs get severe ear infections and have itchy skin. They all three constantly are licking their feet as well to the point of bleeding. I’m going to be switching his food to Taste of the Wild. I already switched to Rachel Ray’s, which I don’t really feel is any better, but I didn’t have time to drive the 45 minutes to Tractor Supply. I really would not recommend this dog food for anyone who has dogs with any type of allergies. On a positive note, all three dogs love this dog food.
I have a 10-year old American Eskimo. She suddenly started rejecting the food she’s eaten for 8 years. Her stools had changed, too. I decided that before I took her to the vet, I would try changing her food. I’ve been feeding her Iams for a couple of months now. She is eating well, her stools are normal and healthy-looking, and she has much more energy (last night she was actually playing with the cats). The only change has been in her food, so I don’t have anything negative to say about Iams. It seems to have improved her condition a lot.
On a side note, she had alopecia before eating Iams, so it certainly didn’t cause her hair loss. Alopecia in double-coated dogs can have many causes other than nutrition: hormone imbalance (have the dog’s thyroid checked) or clipping, for example.
Changing diet is always the first, and easiest, thing to do, but more serious symptoms that come on suddenly should be checked out by a vet.
I have used Iams for years… 6 weeks ago my 3 year old standard Aussie blew her coat. Which at that time I thought was a little earlier then her usual fall shed. Usually it lasts 2-3 weeks with much brushing and really isn’t a big deal. Well she is still shedding and losing big clumps daily to the point of her hair being very brittle and thin (which is not good going into Winter in Wyoming). She has also lost weight, started itching, scratching and licks her front legs all the time. Her coat is not shiny and rather dull. So after much thought, research and informing myself about what Procter & Gamble uses in their Iams dog food I have decided to move on and try something else…. My Koda deserves better
hi im 11 years old and my dog has been itching for about 3 months and his skin arround eyes are bright red from itching he has two scabs on the side of belly from ithching and is licking or chewing on his paws constantly.we have been giving him quarter of benadryl every morning but it stopped working so we gave him half and bought a kids liquis benadryl.we have now been told to wash his feet and face after being walked outside still does not work and we do not know what he is allergic to he is a miniature pure breed yorkshire terrier we dont know what to do and we are thinking about bringing him to the vet . But right now we want to know if he could be allergic to the food or if we should change his diet.
i have a cocker spanial who i changed her food to the green bag of iams 3years ago she is 8 yrs b4 that she was on tin dog food called butchers but the vet said to put her on dry food as its better for her teeth since on iams dry food she has had a lot of skin eye and mouth problems her coat was dull and she was never away from the vet i have now changed her to a dry food called james wellbeloved turkey n rice and in 1 week her coat is shiney her eyes are better i cant get over it i will never give my dog iams dog food ever again and id advice all dog onwners to think b4 giving it to there pet !
My dog had the same allergic reaction to his treats which were peanut based. As soon as I stopped giving him those treats along with a steroid shot from the vet, he stopped itching. Also the corn maybe a reactor with your dog which is a grain commonly avoided.
Your dog definitely has allergies – most likely from being over-vaccinated. Small dogs should never get combination vaccines and should get only 1/2 the normal dose. Look it up online – check out Dr. Jean Dodds and over-vaccination. Feed a raw food diet and never again vaccinate your dog. Only perfectly healthy dogs are to be vaccinated. It’s done only for profit by vets and the vaccine companies. 1 vaccine will give lifetime coverage if the animal is 6 months or more when it gets it vaccine. Kibble is NOT food and will never give you a healthy pet. Iams is lousy.
We feed our 2 Australian Shepard’s and toy poodle, IAMS proactive minichunks (green bag). The dogs prefer the small chunks, with special emphasis on the toy poodle, who is a picky eater. Their stools are hard and consistent for easy clean up. We’ve never had a problem with IAMS and the dogs are full of energy and their coats look great. I would recommend the IAMS brand or Eukanuba brand to anyone. It’s a good dog food and we’ve never had any negative experiences with it.
I have 2 dogs, 5 years and 11 years, that have eaten Iams their entire lives. Both dogs didn’t want to eat their Iams but I don’t feed them people food and so they eventually got hungry enough and ate it. Both dogs got extremely ill (lethargic, vomiting, diarrehea) and my older one went into a severe seizure and then every 5-10 minutes had smaller seizures and eventually had to be put to sleep due to complete kidney failure. The other has recovered after a week of not feeding Iams but is still very leary of any dog food. One is a house and the other an outside dog and the food is the only common denomonator. I also found several other complaints with the same problems after my dogs became sick. I would currently stay away from Iams.
i have been buying iams dog food for the last 10 years . i have 3 dogs .i did buy the iams in green bag and took it back to the store [krogers} because my dogs would not eat it . i usually buy the pink bag ,but i can’t understand why the bag is shrinking every time i buy it lately .now it is down to 15 lbs but the price stays up now 21.00 dollars.getting to the point ,i can’t afford it . doesn’t make sense . my dogs love the lamb and rice in pink bag but they are big dogs and eat a bag a week . all three are strays i took in and i try to do the best for them . my older dog cannot eat any other brand only the lamb and rice by iams agrees with him . thank you ,sheila
