Nutro brand dog food is manufactured by Nutro Products, Inc. Nutro Products is currently located in Industry, California. The company traces its roots back to 1926, when a man named John Saleen bought a dog food company and named it “Nutro Products”. It remained a family-run business until 1976, when the company was sold. In 1985, the MAX line of pet foods was introduced. Nutro Products adopted a unique advertising scheme, which revolved around producing research literature about the dietary needs of dogs and cats. This was their main marketing tool for quite some time, since it compared the ingredients of Nutro brand pet foods with their competitors. In 2007, Nutro Products was purchased by Mars, Incorporated. There are currently three lines of products produced by Nutro for dogs: Nutro MAX, Nutro ULTRA and Nutro Natural Choice. Both Nutro MAX and Nutro ULTRA were involved in the 2007 pet food recall due to melamine contamination.

NUTRO DOG FOOD REVIEW

Nutro brand dog food formulas are primary based off of rice ingredients. Rice bran, ground rice and whole brown rice are commonly included among the top five ingredients. The protein sources often come from chicken or lamb. Some of the formulas (such as Nutro Ultra Large Breed Puppy) do contain corn gluten meal among the first five ingredients. Nutro ULTRA also contains antioxidants, which are reported to help fight free radicals.  The ULTRA formulas are free of chemical preservatives. The Nutro MAX formulas also commonly contain corn gluten meal among their first five ingredients.

Customer reviews about Nutro brand dog food formulas are relatively mixed. Many of the negative reviews cite the fact that Nutro products have gained a lot of bad press because of pet food recalls. This is cited by some dog owners why they will never again purchase a Nutro formula for their dogs. The fact that some of the formulas contain corn gluten was another factor that many dog owners said was negative. Some dogs seemed to develop food allergies with Nutro, which caused symptoms such as digestive upset, scratching, flaking skin and hair loss. When switched to a formula other than Nutro, many pet owners reported that these symptoms disappeared. Some dog owners reported feeding their dogs a steady diet of Nutro brand dog food formulas without any problems.
