OL’ ROY DOG FOOD

OL’ ROY DOG FOOD

Ol’ Roy brand dog food is produced and marketed by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Wal-Mart was first founded in 1962, by American entrepreneur and business man Sam Walton. The company was incorporated in 1969, and made it onto the New York Stock Exchange in 1972. Sam Walton had a dog named Ol’ Roy, which is where the dog food formula got its name. Ol’ Roy brand dog food was first created in 1983.

OL’ ROY DOG FOOD REVIEW

Ol’ Roy is currently the top-selling dog food formula in the United States, most likely due to its inexpensive price. The Ol’ Roy dog food formulas usually include corn as the first ingredient, and always include corn among the first five ingredients. Ol’ Roy was submitted for testing for pentobarbital in 1998, under suspicion that euthanized animals were included in the formulas. Testing was positive for pentobarbital, which was thought to be from rendered cattle used in the formulas.

OL’ ROY CONSUMER RATINGS

Most customer reviews of Ol’ Roy brand dog food are negative. Though it is very inexpensive compared to other dog food formulas, it seems to cause health problems with many dogs. Some of the problems included poor digestion, hair loss, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive weight gain, gas, and low energy levels. Many dog owners stated that they would never feed their dogs Ol’ Roy formulas simply due to the fact that corn was often the first ingredient. Other dog owners cited the bad press of Ol’ Roy formulas due to their testing positive for pentobarbital.

Ol Roy is a terrible dog food. Dogs are meat eaters and Ol Roy has little edible meat. The first four incredients in dog food should be a good meat source, preferably chicken, beef, duck meal, or something similar. The next ingredient should be another identifiable meat soure like Chicken, third ingredient could be brown rice or something similar or a meat. Any fillers are bad for dogs. Dogs are not cows and corn is hard on their kidneys and other organs. Dogs will not normally thrive on poor dog food. Dog food should never contain meat meal, sugar, or other fillers. After 15 years years of dog rescue, the dogs that we take in who have been on Ol Roy or something similar are in very poor condition.

If a first ingredient is chicken meal, it is better than chicken. This is a fact. All ingredients in dog food need to be dehydrated first. That’s all chicken meal, or any other meat meal is. Most animals are 80% water, so if the first ingredient in a dog food is chicken, that means the company weighed it BEFORE they dehydrated it. So after it is dehydrated then any grains or other fillers surpass it in weight.

I love my dogs – I take larger breeds that need a country home to live on our farm – at present we have 3 dogs well over 85 lbs. and they thrive on Ol Roy Food -dry food – they are active, healthy with shiny coats and bright eyes -they range in age from 2 to 13 years old- our newest dog arrived in Jan and has blossomed on the regular meals – he has gained weight and become active and happy with life – he is a totally different dog than when he arrived – any visit to the vet receives comments on what great shape these dogs are in and we are high on their list for large dogs that need to be rehomed – I have fed many dog foods over the years to our dogs and this is the only brand that they didn’t ‘go off’eating from

  3. Patricia says:

I disagree completely with the statement that I do not care or love my dog because I feed him Ol’ Roy. I have a German Shepherd dog that I love more than my own life, and I have fed him nearly every brand of dog food on the market. I have fed him all natural foods, I have even fed him Royal Canin specially formulated for German Shepherds. German Shepherds tend to suffer from dry skin, which mine does have, and none of these foods helped with the problem. I started feeding him Ol’ Roy High Performance dry food, and his dry skin went away, his coat became thicker and more glossy. He doesn’t itch at all anymore. There are no problems with his stool, or his health. So to say people are cheap and do not love or care about their dogs simply because they feed them Ol’ Roy, is ridiculous. My dogs quality of life has improved since I started feeding him this food. He doesn’t sit around scratching all of the time, which is a miserable way to live. Although this food works for my dog, it does not mean it will work for every dog. Dogs are like people, what is good for one does not mean it is good for all. I would gladly donate a bag of Ol’ Roy to starving dogs. I’m sure the dogs would much rather have a bowl of Ol’ Roy rather than nothing at all.

    • Troy says:

Your entire statement is nonsense. Your dogs health, IF it is improving, is NOT because of Ol’ Roy dog food. You don’t get better when you eat bottom of the barrel ingredients, neither would your dog. There may be other factors affecting his health. I agree with those that say if you are so cheap that you would feed your dog this CRAP food then you really don’t care very much about your pet.

    • John says:

Patricia,I completely agree with you. There is alot of bashing of the Ol Roy brand on this page. However if you do the homework on the brand you will find that Ol Roy Hi Performance is of very good quality. I too have a German Shepherd and he is now 6 years old. I have been feeding him Ol Roy Hi Performance since he was one year old. Generally pure bred dogs have very sensitive digestive systems. So I consulted with my veternarian and he agreed that Ol Roy Hi Performance food is great for my dog.

The thing many posters on this site fail to realize is that Ol Roy makes a variety of dry and wet foods. Of the dry foods the Hi Performance is the top rated. I have been buying it for years and in the past 5 years it has come to cost $22.88 per 50lb bag. If you really want to know how Ol Roy matches up to other top name dog foods such as Iams and Science Diet, I challenge readers to look at the nutritional information on Ol Roy High Performance and compare them to other foods. Ol Roy High Performance:
      Crude Protein, min……..26.00%
      Crude Fat, min…………14.00%
      Crude Fiber, max……….4.00%
      Moisture, max………….12.00%
      Linoleic Acid, min………1.50%

      Iams Proactive Health Large Breed
      Guaranteed Analysis
      Crude Protein, minimum 23.0
      Crude Fat, minimum 13.0
      Crude Fat, maximum 16.0
      Crude Fiber, maximum 5.0
      Moisture, maximum 10.0

Overall Hi Proformance is a great dog food with excellent nutritional value for my dog, and I highly reccomend.

      Thanks!
      John

      • concerned says:

Comparing the guaranteed analysis tells you nothing unless you see where the protein, fat, fiber, etc. is coming from. You must list ingredients to make this a viable comparison. Iams and Science Diet are better than some but by no means a high quality dog food (and both are over priced). Top dog food brands include: Acana/Orijin, Go Natural, Fromm, Oven-Baked, Taste of the Wild, etc. If your looking for the best value for quality…Whole Earth Farms and Lifetime are excellent choices.

      • Jes2323 says:

See you have it wrong because science diet and Pedigree are just as crappy! OL’ Roy is horrible for your dog, dogs need meat, not corn meal! I would say anyone who bought this food is either uncaring, ignorant, or downright stupid!

      • Cat says:

1st, Iams is a terrible food as well, Hills is worse, and ol’ roy is awful. Compare it to foods like Orijen, Acana, Natural Balance, First Mate, Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul, Blue buffalo etc etc… The INGREDIENTS in Ol’ Roy are terrible. There is no named protien ( Meat and bone meal) so it can be ANY animal, it can be from roadkill, diseased or disabled animals, it could be other cats and dogs from shelter kills. Also, there is so much corn and soy in this food, it is NOT something dogs can even use. It is also preserved with BHA, which is a carcinogen (cancer causing). Please, do research before feeding your animal, foods like this are killing them. Yes, some dogs can live forever on this crap, just like some people can drink and smoke every day and live off of pizza.. But it is living, not thriving. The reason dogs like this food is because the corn makes it sweet, if you have a kid, they want to eat candy all the time too.. It doesn’t mean you should let them! I work at an all natural pet food store, and have spent a long time researching this area. Please. If you don’t believe me, research it for yourself. Your dog will live a longer, healthier life, and you will feel better actually knowing what is in the foods you feed your animals.

Cat, I totally agree. I have been dealing with dander and my dog was on Kirkland Brand dog food. It isn’t high end and it isn’t low end either. I really started to delve into WHAT the ingredients meant. I was shocked when I started reading what was what. Unless you research, most people don’t know that corn in not something a dog can utilize. I didn’t know that bone meal was a filler, which makes sense! I didn’t know that “meat” meal was ANY kind of meat…which is kind of gross to me. Road kill, beaks, feathers, eyeballs, all that good stuff. GAG. None of those items are in Kirkland brand dog food, but in researching I was dry heaving as I sat at the computer!! We don’t have all of the money in the world but I felt it vital for my pets health to eat a better kibble. I switched to Taste of The Wild High Prairie and it is amazing the difference I see. The price is a little more expensive but not near as bad as some foods. My dog has no more dander and she LOVES the food. She would let the Kirkland sit in the bowl on occasion, meal time for her now is super exciting to her! LOL! I wouldn’t feed my kids processed food with things that are bad for them. Sure they have an occasional treat. But I really would look into each individual ingredient on your dog food label. I was shocked. Oh, and I when you smell the TOTW and then smell the Kirkland brand, I almost gag when I smell Kirkland. TOTW even smells better!

    • P Sebree says:

I too have a German Shepherd and she is the finickiest eater I have ever had in a dog. When I bred Rotts they would eat pedigree dry without any problem but not this dog she won’t touch dry alone I have to mix it. I use merricks dry, 3/4 cup in the a.m. mixed with a can of ole roy,and the same in the evening. She loves the ole roy. to me it looked just like the blue buffalo that i was paying almost 2 bucks a can for, i just can’t afford to feed her blue buffalo everyday.

I am amazed at how she loves ole roy and she is very active too. I am going to continue this ole roy and merrick dry as long as she like it and dosen’t have any other problems.

    • Diana says:

I totally agree with you..!! I love my dogs as much as my children & they live Old Roy high performance.. THEY actually chose it over the more expensive brands.. So, obviously it tastes good & they r very healthy & happy.. Homerun to u.!!

  4. Krissi says:

This food is CRAP!!!!! I have never used it and have never needed to, to know that its complete SHIT!!! ALL of the people I know with their dogs on it are visibly under weight, sick, unhealthy, losing fur or has very dry skin, itches constantly, has fading hair (meaning not a shiny coat of hair) and just all around look horrible!!! I ONLY suggest this food to anyone who does not love, care, or who does not have a heart!!! I wouldn’t even donate a bag of this food to starving animals in shelters!!!! Terrible terrible terrible!!!!! And just because it has certain vitamins in it doesn’t mean anything!!!!! If you could spend an extra few pennies out od your jewish pockets to buy holistics dog food and compare your dogs health, shine, skin, energy level, stools and other things, so will see an immense difference!!!!!!

    • nicole says:

This is funny, because I’ve worked at several animal shelters and not a single one fed the dogs ol’ roy. People donate it, but it gets thrown out because it is complete crap and the dogs would get so sick, which is the last thing they (the dogs and the shelter) need.

      • jayy says:

funny because i just got a pit from the shelter and she wouldnt anything iwould give her. i then got ol’roy and shes never looked healthier. my 15 year old pit has been on this food his whole life and hes still up and going acting just like a pup

      • bettyboop says:

I’m appalled to here that a shelter would toss out any food. Let me tell ya, my dog has been eating this food all his life. I’ve tried the other high end brands and he ends up being very sick. This is the only dog food his digestive systems seems to be able to handle. He is a great dog (Beagle) very healthy and very active!!!

        • doggyhunta says:

I have 8 beagles lab mix and thay all eat ol roy every since their first hard bite of dogfood nothing els they love the food so much they even play soccer with the red balls and sort all the colors out with no trick teaching.

    • Cookie says:

My dogs eat this all the time. Because they eat this I am able to take them yearly to the vet for shots, heart worm test and any yearly needs. Because they eat this I can give them heart worm preventive and flea preventive year round. They are both healthy and happy dogs that are much loved. The only issue is the larger dog has a milk allergy. Keep the milk products out of her diet and she does great. Now I said all this and not once did I use the poor choice of language you used.

    • Elizabeth says:

Total agree, I have just had a terrible experenice with this so call dog food, I would not feed it to a HOG, they can and will eat anything! I have contacted the company only to be told nothing could be wrong with this food (if that what they want to call it). I will never use it again and will be telling everyone I can.

    • Diana says:

I don’t use this food myself for my dogs, they prefer a different brand.. However, my Aunt has used Ol Roy for many years.. Her dog Duke is now 19 & very healthy, never had a health issue or any other problems some foods may cause.. I wish everyone would be opened minded & realize all dog foods have to supply all the nutrients for a healthy life.. Unless the dog needs a prescription diet or has allergies, I see nothing wrong with using a cheaper brand.. Duke’s shiny happiness & shiny coat should explain it all.. To each his own i guess.. God Bless..

    • Brittany says:

Krissi what is wrong with you? you have NO right to tell any one that they dont love their dogs just because they feed their dogs ol roy. i feed my dogs ol roy and they all have shiny coats and are all VERY active. I have 7 dogs and they are all happy and active and they have shiny coats. my oldest dog is a 6 year old lab, boykin mix and she has been eating ol roy her whole life and shes healthy and happy. i love my dogs very much and i would do any thing for them. im 15 and all my money that i earn goes into any thing they need. So dont ever tell me i dont love my dogs.

      • Cathy says:

        Brittany!
Way to tell her (Krissi).. I have a happy, healthy & very energetic puggle whome has eaten Ol’Roy products since birth. I totally agree with you!

      • Nathan says:

It doesn’t mean you don’t love your dog– it does mean you are not an informed consumer, b/c if you are– you’d never feed your dog this. This is like feeding your kid fast food burger and fries everyday of his life. Supersize him!

  5. Sara says:

For the last 6 months my shsi tzu has been eating ol`roy canned food, i bought for boxes of 12 cans on sunday april 24 and monday april 26 she started to to soft stool and she continued to do so until thursday wich is the day that things started to go even worse, she has diarrhea since thursday april 29 and hasn`t stopped since and since saturday night may 1st she strated to vomit. Know she is 11 years old was never this sick is always up to date with her vaccines and with this last batch of canned food she got sick. I want to know if anyone had this experience with their dog, because i just don`t know what is going on with my sweet dog. I`m thinking of getting this batch to a lab for analysis.

have a question can we purchase a bigger bag of the healthy weight management than the 17lbs purchased at walmart was just wondering if you could let me know by email please because really interested in bigger bags..

    thank you michelle

  7. Lori Steidl says:

My dog likes Ol’Roy dog food, especially the Meaty Loaf which has New York Strip flavor in meaty juices. But no where on the can does it show the amount of Ash or Taurine. I worry about these 2 being too high and bad for my dog. No where in the ingredients listed is there any corn meal or ground yellow corn. It contains a lot of vitamins and minerals- more than I’ve seen in other brands.

    • Troy says:

You must not like your dog very much to feed them that garbage. Seriously, would you feed your kids fruitloops cereal every day for their entire lifetime? Hopefully not, because you know its not healthy for them. Why people think feeding Ol’ Roy is any better for their dogs is beyond me. The price alone should be a big smack in the head that the quality of the ingredients is very poor.
