  1. Wellness Super5mix Dry Dog Food formulas are designed to meet the needs of dogs in all life stages. In addition to this, there are some specialty formulas that are specifically designed for small breed or large breed dogs. 2. Wellness Simple Food Solutions dry dog food formulas are designed for dogs that are suffering from food allergies, or food intolerance. These formulas revolve around a "1 + 1" system, which combines a sole protein source (in this case, duck, lamb or salmon) with one easily digestible carbohydrate. The ingredients in these formulas are limited, so that even dogs with severe allergies can choose a formula that fits their diet. There are currently three Simple Food Solutions formulas in this product line.
    1. Wellness Simple Foods Solutions  Rice and Duck Formula Dog Food
    2. Wellness Simple Foods Solutions  Rice and Lamb Formula Dog Food
    3. Wellness Simple Foods Solutions  Rice and Salmon Formula Dog Food
  3. Wellness CORE dry dog food formulas are grain-free, and designed to meet the nutritional needs of dogs that need a balanced protein diet. Instead of stuffing their formula with meat like other dog food companies, Wellness CORE operates off of the philosophy that adding too much protein also increases the fat and calorie content of a food. There are currently three dry formulas in the Wellness CORE product line.
    1. Wellness Core Dry Original Formula Dog Food
    2. Wellness Core Dry Reduced Fat Dog Food
    3. Wellness Core Dry Ocean Formula Dog Food

WELLNESS CONSUMER RATINGS

Most reviews of Wellness brand dog food are positive. The Old Mother Hubbard Company seems to have a good reputation among most pet owners, with only a few people expressing dissatisfaction with the company. Many dog owners cited the high quality of the ingredients in Wellness brand dog food formulas as their reason for purchasing the food. Some of the dog owners that had bad experiences with Wellness dog food formulas cited that dogs with sensitive digestive systems may have some trouble when switched to Wellness brand dog food. One dog owner stated that her bag of Wellness dog food was filled with insects, but this could have been an issue with the retailer(s) from which the formula was purchased.

My puppy loves Wellness. Ingredients are great, and my pups coat is much more shinier and silky since the change months back. As for the bugs, this is mostly due to bad storage on Petsmarts part, or wherever you bought the bag of food. I laugh at the idea that they were there when they left the companys plant :) . Additionally, loose stool is very common when switching a dogs food (especially when switching from low to high quality food). The process should be very gradual, and it will take some time for your dog to get used to it. Great product, I highly recommend it.

  2. SnickersPUP says:

My lovely owner has been feeding me Super5mix just for Puppy. I aboslutly love this food. We hadn’t had any problems that have been described in other posts. I give this food 5***** as its the best. Thanks mom for treating me well. LOve Snickers. ;) )

I had been a Wellness brand customer, specifically Old Mother Hubbard products. Over a period of months and two different PetCo stores in Cerritos CA area I found live pantry moths in the unopened bags of Old Mother Hubbard large dog bisquets.

The moths are harmless but it suggest that the larvae are hatching in the bag and not gaining access from outside the bag. It’s Kinda of gross and when you think of what they leave behind… cocoons, webbing, excrement, dead moth bodies – well I prefer not to feed this to my dogs. My dogs have ingested many disgusting things and seemed happy to do so – Yuck! I wont intentionally feed such things to my dogs but try not to overreact.

Freezing treats for a few days kills these bugs as well as what has not hatched. You can also put the dog bisquets in the oven at about 140 for a few minutes. An alternative dog treat that I use is from BlueBuffalo, my dogs seem to enjoy it.

I’ve been a Wellness brand customer for a while now (I have three dogs. Two weighing about 150lbs each and they eat a lot). I opened a new bag of the large breed adult yesterday that was purchased from Petsmart and it had flying BUGS inside. They were producing/creating a stringy type material. It was NASTY. I’ll be taking the food back to Petsmart tonight. Regarding future purchase of Wellness products, I don’t feel that I trust the quality of your product any more. My pets continuing consumption of Wellness brand food is in doubt and will probably not be on option on their menu (unless they have a taste for FLYING BUGS)!!

  5. Erica says:

I too found worms, webs, and fly wings in my dog’s Wellness food this morning. I am so grossed out. We store the food in an air-tight container. Everyone says that it is from the distributor but if you google Worms in wellness dog food there are so many threads that indicate this is a problem. Try googling Worms in innova dog food…there isnt anything. This seems to be a problem with worms in the food dating pretty far back. I’ve been buying pet food from the same store forever and never had this problem with any other brands. I am so disgusted that I will never feed my dogs this food again.

I bought a bag of Wellness, been using it three years, when opened moths about 25 flew out. I called the company, they said the moths were harmless. Did not affect food, so I used it. My three dogs got watery diarrhea, vomiting. One dog refused to eat the kibble. I spent $1,250 in Vet bills, blood tests, thyroid, stools all tests came back negative, Hundreds of dollars in meds. Finally I bought anothr dog food and the dogs are fine. The company wil hear from me, so will the FDA and both will receive proof.

My owner has been feeding me, Wellness senior dog food and or weight control for a few months now and I like it. No problems here! And my weight is under control. I am a 7 year old AKC and UKC registered German Shepherd Dog and a trained guard dog so I have to look good and be healthy. So far so good with both. Thanks WELLNESS!

  7. Jes2323 says:

It sounds to me like it is all where you buy it. If you buy it a big-time store they don’t care for it as well. It makes sense though, because a smaller retailer can’t afford a bad shipment. Petco or Petsmart can afford to lose a few bags here and there. They don’t take as good care of thier shipments.

  8. Lori says:

I love Wellness food, however, my 2 year old collie mix Hobbes does not. I started him on puppy formula when we adopted him and moved him to Super 5 as an adult. But his stools were always looser than I like and larger than I’d expect on a good quality food. Unfortunately, he’s now developed full on colitis and his vet and I agree that we need to try a different brand of food. If your dog tolerates Wellness, there’s nothing better on the market but I did want to post this so everyone understands that even a great food can be problematic for certain dogs. I’ve resisted changing because I was convinced this was the best food but I think the best food is the one that will keep him healthy.

  9. Mark says:

I’ve been feeding Wellness Super 5 (Chicken) dry and 1Tblsp of canned in evening to dry mix, to our Golden Retreivers for probobably 10 years now. No issues, and never had one. Our group does very well on the product. I’ve also never ran across any issues with bugs, etc, within the product. I’d chock that issue up to where it’s being sold/bought…seems a few folks are consistent on issue and where purchased.

  10. Jodi says:

I too have discovered bugs/tiny worms or larve in the Wellness large breed puppy food. I was in the process of switching the the adult formula so have a new large bag of that and will see how it goes. I was surprised to find this in the companies food as I have heard primarily positive things about them. My adult dogs get Merrick BG and I have had no problems with it. I do not want my large breed pup to have that level of protein from a dry dog food at this point in her growing so unfortunately can not just put her on it.
I really do hope they fix this issue as I had considered Wellness before deciding on Merrick.

  11. Brandi says:

I just started mixing the Wellness Senior with my dog’s low-end dog food (I never did research until now). She immediately picked out all the Wellness kibbles and ate them. She never eats her food immediately. I gave her a little more this morning mixed with the old and she only ate the Wellness kibbles. I took her for a walk right after I had breakfast and she was very happy. When she was a puppy she had issues with being on a high-end food that made her very gassy. Hopefully the Wellness will not have this side-effect.

  12. Elizabeth says:

All my 3 adult dogs grew up on this wellness puppy food my oldest will be 8 years old soon. I now have 5 month old pups that seem to be having very loose stools on this brand something isn’t right with the food red flags bigtime. I will never buy this again what happened to the turkey it’s not listed anymore did they change the recipies add cheap filler’s and a bigger price tag it never use to swell like that before when you wet it down. The more I look into the reviews there seems to be alot more bad reviews and sick dogs.

  13. Laura says:

I have been finding insects and moths in the bags of the large and small dog bones. I have purchased them from PetSmart, Petco, and Pet Supplies Plus and I have had the problem at each retailer. Has anyone contacted Consumer Affairs? I saved the last bag purchased on Saturday 3/19/11 with the bugs still in there and I am sending it overnight to them. These were my boyz favorite bones but I won’t be purchasing anymore.

  14. Krisit says:

I have personnally been feeding the Wellness brand foods to my dogs for 4 years and have experienced no problems. I purchase directly from a distributor so the food “never sits around” in a a warehouse. I have hundreds of clients that feed it as well and not one of us has had an issue with it in the past 4 years.

I do not believe that Wellness is much different than any other brand out there. It does not work for every dog. As Veterinary Technician, I can state that the many dogs have very serious gastro-intestinal reactions to many different foods. I have seen these same reactions mentioned by others to the following foods: Iams, Eukanuba, Purina, Inova, Evo, Blue Buffalo, Solid Gold, etc.

Each of these brands have all have had problems in the past. 3 years ago there was a major pet food recall due to the manufacurers purchasing ingredients overseas that were tainted with “Ricen”. All of these above mentioned foods was tainted and had to be recalled along with hundreds of others. Wellness was the only one that was not recalled becasue all of their ingredients are purchased from US sources within the continental US with the exception of their Lamb (purchased from New Zealand) and their Venison (which I believe is produced in Europe). The point is that none of the foods is spectacular and they have all had thier “moments”. Change is sometimes good, sometimes bad. I do have to say that Wellness has fixed anything in their processing that was deterimined to have not been in the best interest of the pets.

My clients and I still stand behind the Wellness food.

  15. Osandiego says:

We found dead worms in the wellness food today. Althought Pet Smart , the leading Seller for this brand gave our money back and stated to take this up MFG. One of our dogs have been vomitting. I will be contacting Wellness, they will be paying our vet bills. I also found out people have been finding fish bones and have contacted the MFG, they claim to have fixed the problem.
DO NOT BY THIS BRAND. I WILL CONTAT THE FDA

  16. Dom Addeo says:

Unfortunately we have been forced to stop feeding the Wellness products (dry dog food and the snacks) to our dog, Molly. The dry dog food has had small insects, moths, and cob webs. The Wellness bars have had cobwebs. We have called the Wellness 800 number to report these incidents and have been offered coupons. But frankly we have lost faith in the products as this seems to be a systemic issue with the company.

    • carrie says:

We had the same problem with moths/bugs in our dry food as well. Seems like I never had this problem when I purchased it from small retailers, but as SOON as we got it at Petsmart, we’ve had problems. Been loyal wellness users for 4 years, might start looking elsewhere if this persists.

  17. LH says:

My dog hated this food and refused to eat it unless she was starving. Wellness food made her stools so mushy and unformed I couldn’t even pick it up. She would rather eat poop outside than to eat this food. Lets face it, what we think is good for our dogs is probably the opposite. Dogs know what they like and what they will eat.

    • Ann says:

RE: Wellness Senior Formula canned food. Recent purchases of the canned food contained cans that were rancid and obviously spoiled. The problem became apparent once the cans were opened. The cans externally had no signs of damage such as dents etc. All cans were from the same run. I don’t understand how cans from the same run can be okay and not okay – but out of 8 cans opened, 4 were rancid. Underside of lid has a crusted black and brown residue. Contents smell horrible. I spoke with Wellness Customer Service but am less than happy with the response. At first, I was told that somehow air must have gotten into some of the cans. My initial offer to send the cans to Wellness was rebuffed but finally Wellness agreed to mail me a mailer to return one can to them. Rest of the cans are going back to Petco. I will not purchase anymore Wellness product unless Wellness can tell me what went wrong with the canned food. Too bad since my guys liked the food.

      • tutu says:

Just opened mother hubbard chicken and apples and the bag is loaded with worms. I have given the treats and praying the girls do not get ill. I will be calling the office tomorrow. Called the vet and he said to keep a watch for loose stools and vomiting. I am mortified. They eat Wellness canned food and dry food and have never thought the product would have this problem. I am so nervous they are going to get sick
