The Panda Bear hamster is an adorable relative of the Syrian hamster, which is most well-known for its distinctive fur coloration. Technically, Panda Bear hamsters are simply Syrian hamsters that have been selected for their black and white coats. As their name suggests, the Panda Bear hamster is named due to the fact that its coloring is similar to that of a panda bear. Here is some general information about the Panda Bear hamster.
TEMPERAMENT
The Panda Bear hamster is not typically seen as being very sociable with humans. In fact, it could be said that Panda Bear hamsters actually prefer solitude to the company of humans. With this in mind, it’s best to exercise caution when handling a Panda Bear hamster. Panda Bear hamsters may bite if startled, especially if they are awoken while sleeping. Never disturb your Panda Bear hamster when they are resting, since this can cause them to become irritable and aggressive. However, it is still possible to share a loving and gentle relationship with your Panda Bear hamster, as long as you respect their need for occasional solitude.
BEHAVIOR
Panda Bear hamsters are very curious and active animals. Because of this, it’s important to keep your Panda Bear hamster entertained while they are in their cage. Panda Bear hamsters love interactive toys, tasty treats and a variety of chew toys. In addition to this, it’s also highly recommended that you place a sturdy exercise wheel inside the cage of your Panda Bear hamster. Due to their large size, it’s important that you choose an exercise wheel that is able to support large hamsters. Most pet care supply stores will be able to help you choose a sturdy wheel that is suitable for larger hamsters.
FEEDING
Panda Bear hamsters, just like many other hamsters, will thrive when fed a highly nutritious and varied diet. Pellet food formulas are a good option for a dietary base, as they usually offer a balanced and complete nutritional profile. However, it’s still important that you supplement your Panda Bear hamster’s diet with many different fresh foods. This may include celery, berries, walnuts, carrots, whole grains or other ingredients. Never feed a Panda Bear hamster any food that contains a high amount of sugar, such as pastries, cakes or candies. This can cause some serious health problems in Panda Bear hamsters, such as diabetes and obesity.

I just bought a panda bear hamster yesterday in Milwaukee at Pets ‘n things. It’s a girl and she’s super nice a calm. She fell asleep in my hand the first night I got her. She’s an amazing hamster. I love panda’s. My friend has a male and we are going to make them have babies. Haha.
I got a panda bear hamster for my 4 year old son..he is the sweetest friendliest little thing! He loves to be cuddled and falls asleep in my hand a lot. I suppose we really lucked out! I couldn’t ask for a sweeter little man…except that he loves to escape and is gone for days behind the cabinets..I always think of it as a holiday for him and leave him food and water out. I do not encourage it of course but he is a smart little thing!
So i got a girl panda hamster and i was reading should i use newspaper for her bedding ?

Hi I Just Got My Panda Hamster Yesterday And Its A New Born. So I Know I cant Touch It For A Few Weeks But I Was Trying To Fix The Cage And She bite Me. So I Was Wondering If She Will Always Bite Me If I Try To Pick Her Up When She Is Older.? I Don’t Want A Pet I Cant Pick Up And Hold.
You can hold her. You have to know how to handle her.
Always wash your hands. When you first start holding her do it at night. Hamsters are nocturnal doing the bulk of their sleeping in the daytime. And just like when someone wakes you up in the middle of the night you tend to be grumpy. However unlike you, they’re woken up to a giant hand.
If she displays agressive behavior start picking her up with a washcloth or small thick material. You need to hold her for 5 minutes everyday. And it should only take 2-3 times of this for her to realize you are not a threat.
If you’re too nervous to pick her up encourage her. Give her little treats from your hands. She will associate your hands to be a good and welcomed thing in her cage. Carrots lettuce, berries are all delicious treats.
Good luck.
Ive only just relised my hamster ziggy is a panda! i bought him from pets at home and they classified him as syrian! Panda hammies are so cute! I Got ziggy at about 7 weeks from Pets at home! he was soooo terrified of us and the slightest movement at first made him scream and scream! he was terrified! he would retreat into his tube and when we had to take him out we had to block his tubes with cardboard! a month and a bit later he is 1000000% friendly! he lets you touch his teeth without biting! hes a darling!
We just got our Panda Bear Hamster about a week and a half ago. She bit me when we first picked her up from my son’s uncle as a gift but I think she was just scared. How would you feel if something 50 times your size tried to grab you? We clean her cage every 5 days or so but they only mess up in one corner but we change everything everytime anyway. She loves the honey food blocks (bird seed in hardened honey). As for biting, she only bit me the once and you have to remember to give them something to chew on to wear down their teeth (little blocks, pieces of wood, edible houses, etc…) Ours loves the honey food blocks on a stick that is actually made for birds. We hang it on the top of the cage and she ches away at it and as she chews, we move it down. She loves to roll around in her ball and does chew at it and has escaped once and we found her in a boot, asleep so we dumped her back intoher ball and then let her settle down because she wasn’t happy we woke her up. My son (7 years old) loves her but he understands that either Dad has to be there when she comes out of her cage. Mom doesn’t want to have anything to do with her because she’s scared but it has nothing to do with the Panda Bear Hamster being a hamster. My wife just doesn’t like what she calls little furry rodents. Surprize, our hamster doesn’t like her either (ha-ha-ha). Today, she hissed at me for the first time but I think I tried to pick her up before she was completely awake. Usually, when I go to pick her up, she rolls on her back and wants a litle belly rub. We’ve even let her run loose without her ball but watch out, they’re fast and they will find any hole to hide in. She went into our large entertainment unit but after about 5 minutes, I guess she had seen what she wanted to see and came back out (thank goodness). No, my wife doesn’t knowabout that one. She (her name that my son gave her is Julie) has been great and she crawls all over my son and he laughs like crazy. Julie sleeps most of the day (don’t put her in sunlight or anywhere too bright because they don’t like that) but she really gets active at night in the dark. She chews at things, crawls around her cage (I mean all around the sides and top) which is amazing because they are pretty big and they have such small claws and feet but she gets all around anyway and she goes totally nuts on her exercise wheel which is a type that mounts on the side of the cage. I would love tosee how many miles or kilometers she puts on in a night because she really moves and has a great time. Just one more thing, when my son’s uncle first got Julie (he had he for about a week before we could pick her up from out of town), he said she squeeled and made all kinds of noises the first few days. So much that they phoned the breeder and the vet to see if something was wrong. They said that she was most likely going through a big change and was a bit scared. She straightened right out and except for the squeel tonight when I disturbed her, she has been quiet as can be. Give her time for her to get use to you and time for you toget use to her and they are wonderful. They are like any other pet, if they can sense that you like them, they probably won’t like you either (case in point: Julie and my wife). She gets along great with my son and I because we talk to her and play with her. Whether it’s a hamster or a pit bull dog, owners have to be sure they are ready to devote the time and provide the love their pets need and the pets will return the favor. Pet owners, please be considerate when making a choice because a pet is a living creature with feelings and attitudes if you let them. Thanks.
I was just wondering how much time they should be out of their cage? If the carrots should be cooked? How to tell if they are a girl or a boy? please help?
Mines a female and shes a bit mean too.. But i just got her
I just bought two of them. The store sold them as a pair since they have been together since birth. Both females and while they do sometimes “fight” I think they act alot like little old ladies. They both have figured out where the cage door is and if I tap on it they come running. The pet store people told me the bigger one was aggressive but so far all she has done is hiss at me. I’ve held her and talked to her and she seems pretty calm about it all. The other one runs around everywhere and when I take her out she loves to run all over the place. I have talked to them, petted them, held them, and given them treats and I have only had them 4 days and they are already comfortable with me. Just remember if your hamster does bite you it is only because they are frightened and trying to protect themselves from something they view as a threat. Take the time to show them you aren’t a threat. Just like you would a stray dog or cat. Let them sniff you, talk slow and quietly. once they get to where you can pet them in the cage, work up to holding them for a few seconds them put them down. Eventually they will calm down and you can hold, touch and play with them all you want.
My husband and I got a panda bear hamster for our 9 year old daughter, and it was the best decision we made. we got him about a month ago as a very small baby, she named him oreo. She holds him all the time. The only time he has bit any of us is when we first got him. He was ordered and flown to the pet store, and he was scared it was a new place, plus we didnt know that the scent of food on our hands would make him bite either, but now after a month he doesn’t bite at all not even if we have a scent of food on our hands. He loves to be held, and played with, he sleeps on us and runs up and down our arms. He really doesn’t enjoy his ball anymore not sure why, but when we put him in it he just sits there and then he begins to bite at the sides as if he was trying to escape from it, he did succeed one day and we found him under the couch and when we called for him he came running like charging at us he couldn’t get to us fast enough. He is really sweet, and i would reccommend the breed to anyone.
I purchased a Panda bear hamster a few weeks ago not knowing it was a panda bear hamster. I though it was a teddy bear hamster, but oh well. At least she has never bit me or anything. She is the perfect first pet.
So i just got a panda bear hamster yesterday and he isnt mean at all. when i put my hand in his cage he walks up on it and waits for me to pick him up. he doesnt llike to be held too long though. but he hasnt bitten me yet
We just got a male panda hamster from the humane society, and I just love him. I’ve named him Andy. They told us that he bites, and that’s ok. I don’t plan on taking him out of his cage. He is adorable and very curious about everything. Thank you Arin for the list of treats to give him.
My daughter(6) just got a Panda Bear and we all love him. She recently lost her dwarf hamster that was supposed to be friendly but was NOT. So far this one is very gentle and hand friendly. We use a cloth glove to handle because he seems to prefer it and the children are less afraid of being bit.
Hi, I was looking for answers to find out if I could get another female Panda Bear hamster, because sometimes when I am away for a night, my mom says she looks lonely when she goes to check on her so I decided to look up ‘female Panda Bear hamsters; can they be kept together in the same cage?’ And one of the results was here and it helped a bit, but i couldn’t exactly be sure if I could get another and then I saw the blog and I wrote this.
I hope you can help!

I was told by the pet store that you can not put any other hamster with the panda bear hamster not sure why but thats what they told me.
I have a sweet female panda named Anaberu which is Japanese for Annabelle and she sleeeps on me sometimes! she adores me and is so cute when runs in her ball! I have a question though: my hamster used to love me holding her by the scruff of the neck: she would go completely still. Now she squirms but doesn’t seem to be in pain. Is she just grumpy or is it hurting her?
how big do these hamsters get?
I just got my panda bear hamster and he hasn’t bitten me at all. He is attached to his wheel so if you are getting one make sure you get a wheel for the cage. You always have to make sure you wash your hands before and after you touch your hamster. That way your panda bear hammie won’t bite you.
I have a panda bear hamster and she is the sweetest little thing and she only bit me once but that was my fault because i didnt wash my hands before handling her and i just ate doritos but she has never bitten me other than that. She cuddles up with me runs around my arms and plays with the rat i have. I read taht some panda bear hamster are not friendly and they do not make a good pet for children because some dont like to be held alot however you have to let the ahster get use to you and let it come to you. If you are having a problem with you hamster just give it its space and then try again the next time you go to feed it and dont be loud around it because they do not like loud noises it irritates and scares them.. Another thing too is Panda Bear hamsters do not get along well in the same cage with other Panda Bear hamsters because they are very territorial as long as you have 2 cages you should be fine just remeber no all hamsters are cuddly it just depends on the hamster you get and if they are mean or not good luck with your hamsters.
I baught my son two panda hamsters 2 weeks ago my son is seven yrs old well one died for an unknown reason we found it dead in the cadge no bllod and had lots of food and watter. plus we saw him playing up a strom 3 hours before we left not sure if it was boy or girl cause they are babies i am pist off at the pet store I told them that I had 2 kids 9 and seven and I wanted to get them a hamster that was nice and they could learn how to love and take care of a pet so they told me that they had a pair of pandas and pandas are they nicest hamsters u can buy for your kids and kid freindly they had been winged from thier mom 1 day before i got them so i asked if it was ok for us to hold them and the guy said oh yeah pandas dont bite no problem and they seemed to be nice so i baught 1 got 1 free we go home put them in cadge and my kids go to touch them and bam they get bite bad these things screem flip on thiker back and bite and my kids washed thier hands before eouching them. I call the pet store tell them whats up and they tell me the guy forgot to tell me never handle pandas untill 6 weeks after they have been wheend from mom and they are never recamended for children under twelve so i asked if they would take the one thats alive back and they said no please help me i have two kids who are frightened of hamstrs now
Hi Tammy Baby, Where do you live? There are animal shelters that take small furry animals and adopt them out via Petfinder.com where I live in the San Francisco Bay area. I have been looking for a panda or teddy bear female hamster… Lori
Look Tammy Baby, this happened to my friend once, and if you tell them the facts, then maybe they will be more brave. And if that doesn’t work, then do what Lori suggested.
~Tami☺♥
I have a panda hamham! he’s the sweetest thing in the world! has never bitten me and loves to be held :]
We have a panda hamster, her name is Oreo (just like the black and white cookie). We have had many hamsters but always the brown and white kind. Oreo is my sons pet and she did bite him twice when she was little. I honestly think she thought his finger was a food pellet. Anyway in all the hamsters we have owned I have never seen a tamer one. She cuddles with him, sleeps on him, comes to him all the time and she just adores her “human”. I wouldn’t judge all panda hamsters just because a few have bitten someone.
Hamsters are very territorial. I would not suggest keeping two together.
i have a teddy bear hamster but she is sometimes called a honey bear hamster because of her color and she and a panda bear are the same but the color is different but she is very sweet i had her for almost a year now and she hasn’t bit me yet. i think you should get a female teddy bear or panda bear whatever they are very sweet you should get one at Pet co and ask the hamster guy if the hamster you want is sweet and watch her behavior when someone takes her out
Teddy bear hamsters and panda bear hamsters are both types of syrian hamsters getting their names from the unusual markings they bare. I agree these large hamsters are the best small pet to buy, they are cute and cuddly. most people confine them to a small cage but they really need larger cages compared to other hamster types they can also be brought out side to play in a rodent pen (with constant supervision or they will get lost!)these hamsters are a wonderful pet to own, they will bring you great happiness. I <3 PANDA BEAR HAMSTERS!!!
i brought 1 pair of panda hamsters after after one week the male hamster ate the female hamster i was SHOCKED now im afraid to put another with it
what?? should i do plz suggest.
you shouldnt really keep to panda bear hamsters together because they are solitary creatures. if you really would like to keep two together (which i do not suggest) you will need a larger cage, and two females because they are less aggressive.
yea we just bought a panda bear hamster a week ago and it died tursday
umm i am hoping to get a panda bear hamster but now i am scared that it will bite me alot so now i wonder if i should get one please give me some edvice thanks
when you het the hamster if you do, try putting some treats such as a chunck of an apple or lettuce, and that way it will get used to you so it won’t bite you
i dont know why people say that they bite so much my panda hamster never bit me once you just gotta give him time
i have a panda bear hamster and it didnt like me holding it when i first got her. she actually bit my friend. but after a couple days she got used to me holding her. i started my putting my hand in the cage and her just sniffing around my hand, trying to get used to it. just keep trying every day or every other day to hold it. your hamster should get used to u very soon.
p.s. make sure you wash ur hands before u hold your hamster..
thats how my friend got bit, she had just got done eating something and the sent was on her hand, since hamsters have bad eyesight they rely on smell.. and im pretty sure you could guess what happened to my friend =]

I have had my panda bear hamster (Einstein) since April this year and he was well acclimated to people at the pet store. We didn’t try to hold him for the first week we had him home, just talked to him and gave him treats (lettuce, nuts, carrots, apples, etc.) through the cage until he was used to us. Now he begs to be held. He especially loves to run around the house in his ball. Try to buy your hamsters from a smaller pet store rather than a pet super store. They are more likely to spend time holding their animals. Patience is the key once they are home.
I agree about the smaller pet store. We got ours from a smaller chain pet store. They have all their birds and furry creatures in open “boxes” or bin like cages. We went SEVERAL times to look at the animals and there were always multiple people handling the hamsters. My daughter held and played with “Jackson” on several occasions before we actually bought him. It was a good check to see how friendly he would be and greatly shortened the time it took to tame him. We went slow the first week and have only had one bite attempt and it was when he was tired of being handled.
hi i was thinking of getting a panda bear hamster as a class pet. is that a good idea. please i need advise
hello celest you seem as if u are more than unsure about these hamsters, not to worry at all these guys are the sweetest little sweethearts alive think of it like this every hamster bites regaurdless of what breed they are an no human likes to be woken up so why would they? did u know that a draft hamster bites the most out of any other breed?
I dont think it matters what kind of hamster you get. It depends on their handling and where they came from.
I just got one a few months ago. It’s an older male, he is very friendly, and very active. He loves to be held, but would rather be let out to run around.
I would never call him aggressive, just grumpy when woken up (even then he still doesnt bite)
um… i have a panda bear hamster. she actually loves to be held, although she’s quite curious. AWWWWWWW! i must hold her!!!
ok so i just bought a male panda bear hamster and the women said at the pet store they are friendly. well my hamster is mean. it hisses at you when you try to pet it and will bite you. it acts like its anti-social. is it me? or the hamster i have only had it for about a week but im terrified of it. but i try at least every day to pick it up but still unsuccessful. its like its possed please help. thank you.
i also had this problem its cause u gotta give him time to get used to his surroundings and never touch him in his sleep aswell pet him before picking him up and if failed i picked him up by force one and it calmed him down and i was able to pick him up after.
you need to take it slow when bringing a hamster home, let it adjust to its surroundings, try to socialize it. if this doesnt work try feeding it out of your hand simply by offering a nut or seed out of your palm. you must be patient because it may take a while for him/her to gain your trust. after this training he will most likely enjoy sitting in your hands and eatting out of them. if your hamsters aggresive behaviour countinues it could be because he is male, and like most species, males are just more aggressive. i would suggest buying a larger cage to prevent teritorial issues.
when carrying for this little guy it should be consider most important that u do not ever force a hampster into ur grasp if u want to hold ur hammy then put a box small enough for it to crawl in so there is never a risk of it biting u then scoop up the box and let it sniff and crawl up ur body whenever u feel un comfterable use a hamster ball with the lid open and scoop him up and gently put him back in his cage
Incorrect. Female hamsters are and will be more aggresive. Males have a sweeter disposition and r less protective and territorial.
same with mine
thats how my panda hamster was when i first got him. he never bit me but acted like. they are very scared when you first get them. but trust me in time he will be loving
This is to all of you. Hamsters are usually very scared and agressive at first. i would give them at least 2 weeks up to a month to get used to their surroundings. Then each and every day, start to socialize your hamster. You have to be very patient and gentle with them. Over time, they will become very loving and gentle. I hope that i helped=)
Vanessa,
Most likly the hampster was from a big chain store. If possable bring it back he will never change he was probly the runt and had to fend for his food. When you pick it out look at the way they act when their woken up at store. if it squeeles or runs or bites dont pick it. I just got a litter of 12 from my black bear with teddy bear they should be redy in a month. mother and father have calm temperments.
You probably got a hamster thats been sitting in the petstoree for awhile.
When i got my pandabear hamster she was a baby so she grew up with humans.
I’d get baby hamster if I were you.
They are less likley to be aggresive when they grow up cause they’re use to you.
Hi I’ve had then over the years and i always use a thick sock on my hand until they get used to you and the more u handle then the more they become friendly… as time goes by he’ll open his trust and let u handle him without feeling defensive… it’s like this hand is coming at him and he gets scared… GOOD LUCK…
PS Panda ones are my fave then the teddy ones…
Mine was the same but he only did that for a day. You should leave it alone and also when he finish eatting or drinking you should refil it in front of him then go away. That way it would know that you are nice BUT remember toleave him alone when he is sleeping but take a look at him once in a while.
i dont think its u but i do know that its not the breed because my panda hamster is super friendly. she just broke her leg and she still lets me hold her. i think u should ask the pet store person about it. cheak her for symptoms of sickness of injury cause that might make him mad or unholdable.
it is probably no you, if you only had it for about a week, it is probably just scared, you might need to ask some body from a local pet store or veterinary office how to hand train the hamster. I bought a panda hamster and it was super scared the first couple days, i dropped a seed on it by accident and it screamed for a couple minutes. but after a couple days of soothing words and soft and slow actions the hamster got sed to my smell and now doesnt bite at all. except from a few nibbles, but he is just grooming me. i hope this helps.
Hi well dont worry about it being visious just give it time to get used to its home and it should work
my hamster is a female and i named her Mia she is the exact same way as yours
she hisses she bites she is very mean i’ve learned to just leave her be and when you need to change the cage or food let the hamster go into a ball and roll around the house much easier that way
vanessa ,
try not to pick the hamster up right away but sit your hand in the cage and let the hamster crawl onto you. i also have a male panda bear hamster that my hamster gave birth to and i have raised since then and this is what i’ve been doing for him and it has worked.
hey i just got a male panda bear hamster and it just trys to nibble on my fingers by the way they arent mean at all so fuck you you want to torment the hamsters then go ahead but im just reminding you the hamser is more afraid of you then you are are afraid of it so thats probly why it bites you so much not trying to be mean but u need to get along with animals so love you lots
lol
X O X O
Well if its a week just try to train it the best you can. I started out with hand feeding it so it will get used to your hand. I started by not letting ANY one touch mine until its used to it. I also wore gloves so when it bites it wont hurt as bad. Im going to get some chew toys so it wont bite on us.
