Training your pet properly is a very important part of pet care, since it will allow you to have a balanced, healthy relationship with your pet. Through training, your pet will learn that they can accomplish both simple and complicated training commands with your guidance. Training your pet properly is essential, since it helps your pet to understand your role as their guardian. Here are some simple pet training tips to help you to successfully train your pet.

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

Positive reinforcement is perhaps the most important part of training a pet. By using positive reinforcement, you will be able to allow your pet to crave rewards that you provide for good behavior. Positive reinforcement is much more successful than negative reinforcement, which used to be the primary behavioral modification tool used by “old school” pet trainers. Negative reinforcement training operates on the fact that a pet is constantly afraid of being reprimanded, and only obeys commands out of fear of punishment. Over the years, pet behavioral specialists have discovered that this is actually a very counterproductive method of training, and can lead to potentially serious behavioral issues later in a pet’s life. Just like humans, pets will thrive off of patient, gentle training interaction that provides rewards for good behavior. Try not to punish your pet for bad behavior. Instead, simply ignore your pet when they are engaging in undesirable behavior, since most bad behavior by pets is actually an attempt to get your attention. As soon as your pet abandons their bad behavior, immediately give them a reward. This will help reinforce the fact with your pet that ‘not’ doing bad things is also a great way to earn your approval.

USE TRAINING TOOLS

Depending on the type of pet you have, there are many different training tools that you can use in order to make the training process much easier. A simple leash is a great way to help teach your pet to be well-behaved when in an outdoor environment. Surprisingly enough, even animals such as cats and rabbits can be trained to walk on a leash while outdoors. With the proper training program and tools, most animals can be taught to obey a variety of training commands. If you decide to clicker train your pet, you will also need to purchase a small clicking mechanism that is hand-operated. Clicker training is another training method that can be used for all different types of pets, and is usually very effective.

USE TREAT REWARDS

Food is a great way to keep your pet’s attention, as well as a tasty reward for good behavior. Most pets will respond well to a training program that utilizes food as a reward. In addition to this, using food is a wonderful way to prevent your pet from becoming distracted during the training process. All pets love to be rewarded when they do something correctly, and food is a great way to show your approval of certain behavior to your pet.
