When training your dog, there are certain types of equipment that are essential for ensuring success. Training your dog is an integral part of overall pet care, since the proper training will ensure that you are able to maintain a good relationship with your dog. Though there are hundreds of different dog training tools available on the market today, here are the most essential must-have dog training tools.

Training Collars For Dogs

Perhaps one of the most important pieces of equipment that you can have for training your dog is a collar. The use of a collar will give you optimum control over your dog during training, and will make the overall training process much easier for both you and your dog.

When selecting which type of collar that you wish to use for your dog, you need to keep in mind the advantages and disadvantages associated with each collar. Collars such as choke collars, shock collars and spiked collars are usually associated with harsh training methods, so be aware of this before you purchase any of these items. If you are engaging in a training program that only uses positive reinforcement, you may want to only purchase a simple nylon collar for your dog. Your dog’s collar should be secure, but not tight enough to cause any difficulty breathing.

Leash

A leash is another important tool that you can use for training your dog, especially if you wish to take your dog for walks outside of your backyard. When choosing which type of leash you wish to use for your dog, you need to take into account your dog’s strength, weight and excitement level. For dogs that are very high-energy, you will need to purchase a strong, sturdy leash that has a secure metal clip. For dogs that are older or low-energy, you can settle for a medium-strength leash.

You may also choose to purchase a retractable leash, giving your dog a designated amount of roaming room. However, when first leash training your dog, it is recommended that you initially purchase a leash that only has a short amount of room for your dog to roam away from you. This will make the leash training process much easier.

Crate

A dog crate is one of the most important dog training supplies that you can purchase. A crate will be your dog’s sanctuary, as well as an important training tool. When purchasing a crate, be sure choose one that has adequate ventilation. However, you also want to choose a crate that is large enough for your dog to sit, lie down and stand up comfortably in. This is very useful when you’re working on potty training, since dogs will instinctively try to avoid going to the bathroom in the same area where they sleep

Treats

Treats are an important part of training a dog. Giving your dog a tasty treat when they do something good is one of the best ways to ensure they do it again. A few treats and plenty of praise is the quickest way to get the results you want. But don’t overdo it. You don’t want a fat dog!

The best thing to do is always carry treats that about the same size as a pea. You can use commercial dog treats, or you can make your own. Some people use small bits of cheese, salami or other meat products that are cut into small enough pieces to be used for dog pet care training.

Some people use a “bait pouch”  to carry the treats but a bag in your pocket will do the job just as well.
